Welcome to the best kept secret...where the ocean meets the lake.

A multiplicity of experiences are on offer in this district and there is a host of fascinating history available for discovery, from the first times of settlement to modern times. Growth from ventures such as Fishing, Timber, Mining, Boat Building, Commerce, Land Development, Sport and Recreation. Written and photographic material is readily available at The East Lake Historical Society Inc, Swansea Arcade, shop 22/174 Lake Road.

Situated on the coast 1 hours drive from Sydney, the water ways and surrounding areas offer fabulous experiences to the most discerning visitor. The Lake area is largely unknown for its unique blend of opportunities for tourist participation which span the gambit from passive to active recreation.

The most visual rewarding lake entrance viewing is through the historic town and district of Swansea, either by road, water or air. Swansea is the major town in the midst of smaller area towns from Catherine Hill Bay in the south to Pelican/Blacksmiths in the north.

Whilst Swansea offers its own multifaceted activities, many pathways unfold and diverge from its gateway. Surrounding towns dot the shores of Lake Macquarie, and they all have their own potential and history to offer a very wide range of activities.

Visitors are able to explore many activities or recreational facilities. The information centre and hospitality venues are able to advise on the wide range on offer. Perhaps tours, fishing charters, Lake Cruises, skin diving, scuba diving, surfing, sailboarding, parachute boarding, hang gliding and so much more is available. The list is endless depending on fancy and finance.

Perhaps rare inclement weather is a hindrance. This gives the opportunity to investigate the historical side of the area. Why and where is Black Neds Bay and Margarets Bay? Why is the history of Coon Island fascinating? Where is Boyds boat yard and what effect did it have on the WW2 local effort?

What commercial benefit came from Timber, Coal, fishing, Religion, Boat building, Schooling in early days etc.

A welcome is waiting. So why not come and enjoy our many delights?
